MANN, Thomas (editor). SCHOPENHAUER, Arthur

  • The Living Thoughts of Schopenhauer. Published by Cassell & Co. Ltd., London in 1939.

Description

  • Original red cloth, spine lettered in gilt. With the original blue, black, and white dust jacket. Octavo.
  • Ownership signature of British sociologist Donald G. MacRae to the front free endpaper. A near-fine copy, the cloth clean, internally clean and bright throughout. The jacket remains excellent with an entirely un-faded spine, showing only minor creasing to the upper edge and a single chip to the foot of the spine causing minor loss to the paper, otherwise excellent.
  • First UK edition, first printing, featuring a substantial 30-page introductory biographical and philosophical essay by Nobel laureate Thomas Mann on the works of Arthur Schopenhauer.
  • This copy boasts a highly fitting academic provenance, having belonged to Donald Gunn MacRae (1921–1997), one of the pioneering figures of post-war British sociology and a long time Professor at the London School of Economics (LSE). Pre-war copies of this series are scarce in such bright, un-faded condition, with this example further enhanced by its direct association with a foundational mid-century British social scientist.
