MACAULEY, Sir Robert Stevenson
- “Sunset” The Gleaners, original watercolour and gouache on paper, 1880.
Description
- Gouache and watercolours on paper. Signed to bottom left quadrant, R. Macauley in his latter day manner.
- Stevenson was influenced by the French style of painting and in particular the work of the Barbizon school. French portrait and landscape painters Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot and Jean François Millet being chief among those.
- The influence of the French Barbizon here is evident in the compositional and thematic similarity to the Jean François Millet’s famous oil painting, The Gleaners.
- Stevenson was one of the founding Glasgow Boys, a group whose reputation of being at the fore of C19th Scottish realism was known internationally.
- The condition of the work itself is near fine, the colours retain their intensity. The slight fading, visible only along the edges.
- Other of Stevenson’s works are held in the Scottish National Portrait Gallery and the Royal Academy. Himself an influential painter, Stevenson was admired by many who followed. Not least among those was Vincent van Gogh.
