NASH, Paul

  • SUNSET AT WORTH MATRAVERS (1937); in first edition offset lithograph; published for the Soho Gallery suite, London, 1937.

Description

  • In fine or better condition. A very nice impression without colour loss.
  • Presented in a custom-wooden frame by Parsonage Studio; crown stamped by them to verso.
  • The art of Paul Nash revealed the horror of the human side of war; but the aspect most heightened in it was the outrage on Nature, the unnatural, and therefore already in a sense the super-real. This distinction is worth emphasizing because it shows that certain elements which afterwards became predominant in his art were there from the beginning; that they are an innate quality of his vision and not an adopted fashion.
  • The work shows us the direction of Nash’s art first from Nature to, here, apparently an arbitrary construction of the imagination.
  • Image, 14.1x21.2cm; external 22.1x29.8cm.
