PICASSO, Pablo

  • Guernica; offset lithograph, published by Silvana Editoriale d’Arte, Milan in 1953.

Description

  • Large monochrome offset lithograph on heavy wove paper. Double page, with centrefold, as issued.

  • Fernanda Wittgens, the pioneering director of the Brera Pinacoteca, fought alongside painter Attilio Rossi to bring Picasso's work to Milan. The 1953 Milan retrospective was the first and only time Guernica was ever shown in Italy. The canvas then returned to the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York before its final journey to the Museo Reina Sofía, Madrid.

  • Guernica was published immediately in this edition of the suite to coincide with the run of the exhibition from September to December 1953.

  • It was laid out specifically on a double page spread to maintain the horizontal aspect ratio of the mural.

  • Bright and clean throughout, excepting a small paper scuff along centre fold, very good indeed.

  • Framed and glazed and mounted over black; contemporary wooden frame.

  • Sheet, 56.2x34.5cm; external, 67.7x49.8cm.
