SMITH, Matthew

  • Nude, Fitzroy Street, No. 2 (1916); a first edition offset lithograph pressed in Japan, 1975

Description

  • A fine lithograph, offset; very good impression with good alignment; professionally tipped and housed in complementing 1920s hardwood frame. Colour remains unfaded and without toning of the paper.

  • Presented by Parsonage Studio, hand finish and crown stamped to verso; thus a one of a kind piece.

  • In 1914 Smith began to take up the Fauve legacy point by point, although he still kept a lingering taste for dark colors. As we can see in this painting, he was already a master of the art of connecting complementary colors and exploiting chromatic brilliance.

  • A British modern artist, Matthew Smith was born in the northern town of Halifax in 1879, and studied at the Manchester School of Art and the Slade School.

  • Framed, mounted and glazed.

  • External dimensions approximating, 45x39cm.
