Description
Uncommon original artwork by Herman, whose reputation is already well established. It comes from the period in his artistic career which formed his style as we know it.
Herman moved to London in 1943, where he exhibited with L S Lowry at the Lefevre galleries before resettling the following year in the Welsh mining village of Ystradgynlais in 1944. He remained there until 1955, giving rise to his best-known body of work, focusing on the Welsh miners and their community. Herman did not paint miners suffering underground. Instead, works from this period focus on workers above ground, capturing them in moments of exhaustion or quiet camaraderie. Studies like this served as essential building blocks for his larger oil paintings, many of which now hang in major public institutions such as the Tate Gallery and the National Museum Wales.
