HERMAN, Josef

Mother and child, 1946. Original work, in watercolours, gouache and ink.

Description

Original artwork by Herman. Watercolours, gouache and Indian ink on paper. Near fine condition and without colour loss. Framed and glazed with acid free mount.

The work is a study drawing from a period in Herman’s artistic career which formed his style as we know it. The abundant use of shadow to create his forms is distinct and easily observed here. The use of colour is minimal as always, yet achieves extraordinary vivacity.

Herman moved to London in 1943, where he exhibited with L S Lowry at the Lefevre galleries before resettling the following year in the Welsh mining village of Ystradgynlais in 1944, where he remained until 1955, giving rise to his best-known body of work, focusing on the Welsh miners and their community.
