Lurcat was an active member of the French Resistance during World War II. His bestiary included roosters, owls, and salamanders, which often served as coded symbols for national pride and human endurance against the "fire" of war and occupation.
Jean Lurcat was close to many of the greats of the 20th century. Among these were Matisse, Renoir and Cezanne.
