GERSON, Horst

  • Rembrandt Paintings. Published by Harrison House, New York in 1985.

Description

  • Folio. Original cream cloth, spine lettered in gilt. With the original illustrated dust jacket. Over fifty additional colour plates added to the catalogue section.
  • Cloth clean and firm with sharp corners; gilt lettering to the spine bright and fresh.
  • Edges only lightly rubbed; a bright, unfaded copy.
  • Text block and heavy illustrative plates clean, crisp, and free of marginal annotations, institutional stamps, or foxing.
  • An excellent example of Horst Gerson’s critical revision of Abraham Bredius’s classic catalogue raisonné. Serving as Professor of History of Art at the University of Groningen, Gerson famously established the baseline methodologies for modern Rembrandt connoisseurship by down-attributing and reassessing works previously attributed to the master. This edition bears the notable copyright notice of Meulenhoff International, Amsterdam, and features the rigid print distribution restriction prohibiting export back to the Netherlands.
