Prior to the war, Henry Moore was heavily associated with Surrealism. The raw empathy he felt for defenceless Londoners forced a permanent shift in his career toward a more compassionate and figurated vision of the human form. The wartime sketches were fundamental in this development.
The seated and reclining forms documented in the sketchbooks served as direct prototypes for his monumental post-war public commissions including his landmark draped reclining bronze figures from the 1950s.
Framed and glazed; contemporary wooden frame, black finishing, with acid-free mount.
