MATISSE, Henri

  • Odalisque sur fond rouge; fine pochoir in gouache over lithograph, printed by L'Atelier Desjobert for Chroniques du Jour, Paris in 1930.

Description

  • Rare gouache stencil over lithograph, printed to velin paper. In fine condition and without colour loss. Very good impression, bright and clean throughout.
  • Executed under the close administrative oversight of the artist.
  • Framed and glazed with UV resistant art glass.
  • The suite was printed at the renowned and trusted workshops of L'Atelier Desjobert, Paris, who specialised in pochoir and fine lithography. They did not use standard mechanical colour presses for the plates. Instead layers of rich, opaque gouache were painstakingly brushed by hand through metal stencils. Because the ink sits thickly on top of the paper rather than soaking flatly into it, the prints possess an intense, tactile, and paint-like quality.
  • Sheet, 27.8x22.4cm; external, 30.7x25.4cm.
