MATISSE, Henri

  • Dessin a l’encre de chine; fine lithograph printed at the workshops of Mourlot Freres, Paris, for Galerie Louise Carre, in 1941.

Description

  • Fine lithograph in black and white, imprinted to Arches vellum paper, decked edges, without fading.

  • The suite was published on the occasion of the exhibition of Henri Matisse's drawings at Galerie Louis Carré, from November 10 to 30, 1941. Published in an edition run of 500.

  • What makes this special is its scarcity and historical role as a transitional blueprint. The fluid, minimalist lines captured in this portfolio laid the immediate groundwork for his monumental, Thèmes et Variations, published later in 1943.

  • Framed and glazed; contemporary wooden frame with solid black finishing, mount elevated over black.

  • Image, 20.8x16.3cm; external, 36.9x24.9cm.
