The Skira suites were renowned for their fine scholarship and high quality lithography.
The choice of poet Louis Aragon to write the accompanying text for this suite was highly political. Aragon was a leading figure in the underground French Resistance against the Nazi occupation. Matisse had already formed a profound 27-year friendship with Aragon. By commissioning Aragon for the suite right after the war ended, Skira and Matisse were celebrating both the liberation of France and the survival of French modern art. The suite was the first Swiss portfolio of Matisse's work.
Collotype in near fine condition and without colour loss or fading.
Framed and glazed, contemporary wooden frame with acid free mount.
