MATISSE, Henri

  • Study of the Studio of Gustave Moreau; fine collotype. Published by the renowned Albert Skira, Paris, in 1946.

Description

  • The Skira suites were renowned for their fine scholarship and high quality lithography.

  • In excellent condition, without fading or colour loss.

  • This collotype is tied to an immense mid-century art world rivalry. Printed by Albert Skira, legendary publisher who used to work closely with Teriade. The two had an intense falling out over creative control years prior. Throughout the late 1940s both publishers aggressively competed for Matisse's exclusive attention, resulting in a golden age of printmaking where Matisse gave Skira the rights to his Ronsard illustrations.

  • This suite was the first serious, comprehensive post-war portfolio of Matisse's work published in Switzerland. It was a curated statement of survival and cultural rebirth. Released in December of 1946 in an unnumbered limited edition.

  • Framed and glazed; contemporary raw wood frame.

  • Image, 25.3x20.7cm; external, 41.4x31.2cm.
