By 1943 the Vichy (Nazi) regime had aggressively suppressed modern art in Paris, classifying it as Degenerate Art. Publishing a portfolio of Matisse's most recent paintings right under the noses of German censors in Occupied Paris was a profound act of defiance. It was a statement to the world that French modernism and intellectual freedom could not be extinguished by ideology. And so, this specific run holds great historical and cultural significance making the 1943 sheets highly coveted.
