HOLBEIN (Younger), Hans

  • The King; woodcut of Holbein’s, Danse Macabre; plated by Chiswick Press, London in 1898.

Description

  • In near fine condition. A very good impression to laid paper. From the rare 1898 edition run of The Dance of Death.
  • The 1898 series were impressions from the blocks engraved in 1833 for Douce's Dance of Death. They were at the time the best impressions in wood and the closest by method to the original and incomparable woodcuts of master carver, Hans Lutzelburger.
  • Holbein's series of woodcuts shows the figure of "Death" in many disguises, confronting individuals from all walks of life. None escape Death's skeleton clutches, not even the pious.
  • Framed and glazed; contemporary wooden frame with acid free mount.
  • Image, 6.4x4.8cm; external, 30.2x25.9cm.
