GILL, Eric

  • Nude No. 12; lithographic print in black and white, printed by Hague & Gill in 1938.

Description

  • This lithograph is from the much rarer, very first edition of 1938.
  • Framed and glazed with UV resistant art glass; mount elevated over black.
  • In excellent condition, minimal handling marks and without colour loss or fading.
  • Throughout his career, Eric Gill moved in influential circles alongside prominent contemporaries such as the sculptor Jacob Epstein, the painter and critic Roger Fry, and the artist and poet David Jones, who was a member of Gill’s religious craft community at Ditchling. His work also drew profound influence from medieval ecclesiastical statuary—specifically the 12th-century Chichester Reliefs—as well as the spiritual-erotic theories of philosopher Ananda Coomaraswamy. His work adorns some of the nation's most notable public buildings, including Westminster Cathedral and Broadcasting House.
  • Image, 22.4x13.7cm; external, 29.1x21.2cm.
