PICASSO, Pablo

  • Ceramiques de Picasso; first edition suite Published by Albert Skira, Paris in 1948. Signed and embellished association inscription, by Pablo Picasso. Text by Suzanne and Georges Ramié.

Description

  • First edition, first printing. Inscribed by Pablo Picasso on the title page to the pioneering New York art dealer Samuel M. Kootz and his wife Jane: "Pour Jane et Samuel Kootz / leur ami Picasso / PARIS 11.1.48 (corrected to 1949)”.
  • The embellishment of the correction is characteristically anthropomorphic. It captures the inner workings of Picasso and a moment in time of his important relationship with Kootz.
  • Highly intimate association of historical significance. It is from the period of the beginning of their partnership. Kootz had closed his New York gallery to represent Picasso globally. He was the man responsible for introducing Picasso into American market after war. The association holds paramount importance in charting the post-war transatlantic art trade. Samuel Kootz was the literal gatekeeper of European Modernism in America.
  • Wrappers lightly toned with minor handling wear to the spine, internally fresh, plates pristine. A near-fine copy with original glassine. Folio. Original illustrated stiff paper wrappers, housing the unpaginated text booklet and 18 plates mounted on heavy stock.
  • Provenance: from the estate of Joyce Kootz.
