Mixed media composition on light board; executed in pastel and gouache.
Berry’s use of the very darkest of tones alongside the contra, parallels Staffordshire’s industry with nature, for which Berry is so well known. For all the dominance of industrial tones, the work’s balance remains. An important piece of a period in the development of Arthur Berry’s ideas.
There is a second composition to the back of the board. Likely that Berry had been unsatisfied with the first composition, prompting him to start over on its opposite side. The piece is backed with Perspex in order to make the first composition to verso, visible. In very good condition and custom framed; Italian wood frame with black finishing.
