From the library of Donald Gunn MacRae. First edition of the Warhol monograph, paperback issue. Published to accompany the definitive posthumous retrospective of Warhol’s career at MoMA following the artist's death in 1987.
Inside are, four pages of manuscript lecture notes, unsigned, in blue ink on two sheets of lined loose leaf paper. The manuscript sheets crisp with original folds. Near fine condition overall.
Substantial, four-page loose manuscript comprising the detailed, firsthand lecture notes taken by Donald Gunn MacRae on November 1, 1989, at the Hayward Gallery.
The occasion was an insider briefing delivered by the British artist Mark Lancaster (1938–2021) during the London opening of the MoMA retrospective. Lancaster moved to New York in 1964 and immediately integrated into the Factory circle, serving as Warhol’s primary studio assistant, filming several Screen Tests, and personally executing the mechanical applications of the iconic early silkscreens.
The accompanying 1961 Pelican edition of Kenneth Clark’s Landscape into Art, is also from the library of Donald Gunn MacRae. It serves as an integral graphological anchor for this archive. Signed and dated by MacRae to the front end paper. Both the Warhol and this, taken directly from MacRae’s private library of over 1200 volumes.
