TERIADE, E. (editor)

  • (Ancient Egyptian art) Two Egyptian Bas-Reliefs: Pharaoh Ramesses II & Goddess Satis. Matching lithograph pair, published by Teriade, Paris in 1939.

Description

  • A matching diptych pair of colour lithographs, on vellum paper, pulled at the studios of Mourlot Frères, Paris.
  • In near fine condition, without colour loss or fading, bright and clean throughout.
  • Framed and glazed; uniform contemporary slim matt black wooden gallery frames.
  • A graphic diptych translating the scale of ancient Egyptian architectural reliefs into twentieth-century master lithography. The two complementary plates reproduce fragment details of major New Kingdom painted limestone carvings preserved in the permanent collection of the Musée du Louvre. The first, Egyptian Head, portrays the youthful profile of Ramesses II from his temple at Abydos. The second, Goddess Satis, captures the Nile guardian deity wearing her characteristic horned crown from Elephantine Island. To retain the depth of the original stone, publisher Teriade commissioned the Parisian studio of Mourlot Frères to print the plates using subtle, dense colour overlays to painstakingly replicate the antiquity's original chisel work and weathered mineral pigments.
  • Image, 35.5 × 26.5cm; external 43.2x33.2cm.
